Alfred Marshall在1890年出版的經濟學原理(Principles of Economics)提到：Political economy or economics is a study of mankind in the ordinary business of life; it examines that part of individual and social action which is most closely connected with the attainment and with the use of the material requisites of wellbeing.政治經濟學或經濟學在研究人類日常生活中的運作，個人及社會行動中與資源之使用及增進福祉密切相關的部分。
不過，後來經濟學的發展，日益偏重數理運算，少了那一份直覺和生活體驗，不無遺憾。本書透過若干生活實例，讓讀者體驗其中奧妙。本次改版除了部分修正之外，也增加討論常見的經濟現象，藉由品味生活、品味經濟等單元，在日常作息中親身體驗經濟的運作，感受經濟理論的妙用。
